Jawalamukhi is a pilgrimage town in the Shivalik foothills of Kangra district, built around the Jwalamukhi Temple — one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of Hindu tradition. Inside the sanctum, natural flames burn continuously from crevices in the rock rather than from a conventional idol; geologists attribute this to natural gas seeping from deposits beneath the site, while for pilgrims the flames are the goddess’s own manifestation. The town’s market and accommodation are built entirely around the temple.
