Katra exists almost entirely because of Vaishno Devi — the road- and rail-connected base town where pilgrims register and stay before the route up to the Bhawan shrine (on foot, pony, palki, or helicopter). Katra is the main practical stay base for most trips; the Shrine Board itself also runs dormitory accommodation further up the route and at Bhawan for pilgrims who choose to stay overnight there.
