Pangi is a remote sub-division of Chamba district on the far side of the Pir Panjal, cut off from the rest of the district for roughly six to eight months of the year once winter closes its access roads. It is home to the Pangwal tribal community and their own language, folk music and dance, in a landscape of stark Chenab-gorge terrain historically nicknamed "Kala Pani" for its isolation. Killar, the sub-divisional headquarters on the Chenab gorge, has basic guesthouses, a bank, a post office and a small hospital; smaller villages further into the valley rely on simple homestays and forest rest houses. Since the pandemic, Pangi has drawn a small but growing wave of offbeat and adventure travellers — this is genuine basic-infrastructure travel, not comfort tourism.
