Almora has been a hill town in its own right since the Chand kings made it their capital in the 16th century — a working market town on a horseshoe ridge, not a resort. Its bazaar still deals in copper craft and Kumaoni sweets, and the town serves as the practical base for exploring the wider region — Kausani and Ranikhet are both under an hour away, and Binsar's forest sanctuary a bit further. Almora's own identity is the town itself: steep lanes, old temples and a slower pace than the lake towns nearby.
