Kausani is small by design — a ridge settlement with a handful of hotels lined up to face the Himalayan skyline. On a clear day, Trishul, Nanda Devi and the Panchachuli peaks run across the horizon in one continuous panorama, which is the entire reason the town exists as a destination. Mahatma Gandhi stayed here in 1929, at what's now the Anasakti Ashram; beyond that and a working tea estate, there isn't much to the town itself — it's a place to sit still and look at mountains, not to fill an itinerary.
