Mashobra is a genuine hill town in its own right, not just a resort marketing tag — it grew into a favoured weekend retreat for colonial-era Shimla by the late 19th century, and today mixes cedar forest, apple orchards and quiet village lanes about 11–13 km from Shimla. "The Retreat," the Rashtrapati Niwas presidential retreat, has stood here since 1850, though its estate spills toward the neighbouring hamlet of Chharabra — the same locality where the Oberoi's Wildflower Hall is officially sited, despite being widely marketed as "Mashobra." Genuine village-level guesthouses sit alongside a handful of higher-end resort properties in the wider area.
