Joshimath — also recorded in official use as Jyotirmath — clings to a steep mountainside where the roads toward Auli and the upper Alaknanda valley meet. It's a working town first, not a resort: hotels, market stalls and transport stands built for travelers passing through rather than lingering. The Narsingh Temple and the town's association with Adi Shankaracharya give it a real historical layer, but its main job today is as the base from which you reach Auli's slopes or continue further into the mountains.
